I’ve been wanting to switch over DreamHost for ages but due to my limited knowledge on LAMP platform and DreamHost price is a bit expensive compare to my .net host, I couldn’t dare to test it out. But with this good promotion deal, I can afford to play around on DreamHost for 2years.

I want to keep my current DotNetPark windows hosting too in case if I happen to host .net site but I don’t plan to publish a new site anytime soon; I only have this mayvelous blog and 1 hosting should be sufficient enough.

Anyhow, now mayvelous.com is sitting on DreamHost and I’ve placed quite a lot of plugins which I couldn’t with previous Windows host. Mayvlous is now with,

• Friendly URL
• Related Post Links under each post
• Photo Gallery
• Post Rating stars
• Affiliate Logos & Links at the side bar
• A few widget ads programs which can only seen by certain countries

and many new plugins I’m still playing. I want to change my theme too but I still love the current one and too lazy to search for good themes so I’ll leave it as it is for now. Ok, Just drop by to say hello and let you know the updates…right, that’s about it.

I had a problem with Myanmar unicode posts which turned into weird characters and ??? after the upgrade. Seem like my DB Collation and Character encoding changed into latin1_swedish_ci while upgrading the DB.

I fixed it using this plugin: g30rg – UTF-8 Database Converter.
The plugin says it’s not supported for this version of wordpress but I got no choice. I just close my eyes and convert away. Luckily, the conversion went fine and all my Myanmar posts back to normal.

One more weird thing after the conversion was that, this post (posted last nite with QuickPress) got cut off and only the first line was there. I don’t know how it happened, I checked the file versions but all got cut off too. Luckly (again) I was able to retrieve the content back from my feed and here I am updating the post.

Previously, to deploy a php application eg. wordpress, on Windows, we have to use something like XAMPP (that’s what I used anyways) and the like, do some configurations, pull hair and throw some fits to be able to deploy successfully.

Now they’ve released this thing called Microsoft Web Application Installer, which is a freeware and suppose to ease those pain while deploying.

The Web Application Installer Beta is designed to help get you up and running with the most widely used Web Applications freely available for your Windows Server. Web AI provides support for popular ASP.Net and PHP Web applications including Graffiti, DotNetNuke, WordPress, Drupal, OSCommerce and more.

System requirements

• Supported Operating Systems are: Windows Vista RTM, Windows Vista SP1, Windows Server 2008
• You must have administrator privileges on your computer to run Web Platform Installer Beta
• .NET 2.0 Framework
• Supported Architectures: x86 and 64-bit

Installation Steps
Install Web AI easily:

#3. Double click on the icon – CHECKED.
#4. Follow the wizard……………………

Just to make sure, let me follow the Word Press Installation guide as well.

Install Instructions
Installing WordPress is easy with the Web Application Installer.

1. If you haven’t already installed the Web AI, go get it now.
2. Launch the Web AI and agree to terms.
3. Select WordPress from the list of Applications and click Next.
4. Configure your IIS server and click Next.
5. Put in your database settings and application configurations and click Next.
6. Accept any needed prerequisites (Web AI will help you get them) and click Next.
7. Go get a cup of coffee while Web AI installs WordPress.
8. Log in to your WordPress site as admin and start customizing.

Just one small thing I like to see/suggest is to put the book covers in each post and if possible a brief intro/description of the book. But I know it could be too much hussel for the site owner as he got to manage lots of books and some books might not have covers. But just a thought anyways as it will make it much prettier and informative for each post. The site is very new so I bet they might be doing lots of improvments later on. (like replacing default wp blogroll list with related myanmar ebook site links etc)

It’s a good thing they have “Help” page explaining how to use Megaupload and also provided the login info. Very thoughtful indeed. Note: Once you click on the category link, it will direct you to a page with all entries for that particular category/author. Download links are disabled there and you have to click post title to get to proper page with enabled download link. Oh check out the “Credits” page write up. I find it quite amusing especially the last sentence. Becareful, you might twist and tangle your tongue as I did. Check out the parent site ie. www.mmblogs.net too. I think they’re using WordPress MU and providing free blog service on my favorite wp platform which is very cool indeed. They got a good write up on what their site is all about and some rules and regulations. The only thing I don’t see that they should have is the network user links. Should provide the links of all those blogs that using their service. It’ll be good to see how people make use of their service don’t ya think so?

Mayvelous lost all the comments from 3 to 5 months back for not been backup regularly.
May has to drop the whole comment table, had to add new table and filled with very old back up script.
