My brother, Aung a.k.a Zatlite, has started blogging yesterday after a few years of persuasion from me. He started off with twittering ,which was also the result of my persistent persuasion, and has been a good regular twitterer to date. Yesterday, he suddenly made himself a blog and now he’s crazy about it.

His very first blog, “The private life of a badminton maniac“, talks about all his passion on racquet sports, especially badminton and racquet breaking hobbies. I’ve posted some of his actions on the past Badminton games in this post and; photos and videos of his squash tournament here.

I’m sure he’s no stranger to mayvelous’s regular followers as he is mentioned many times in my posts. He has also written a few posts on mayvelous: KISS My Arse!, bugs and fixes posts.

You can see some of his ramblings in these posts: A Corn Seed Story , Bulldozer, April Fools, Sister Hiring Hitman, and more under “Family“, “Brothers and Sisters“, “Conversation” categories.

This little apps, “Open Street Map” is getting popular among my colleagues and quite becoming the topic of discussion this morning. It’s all started from strangepants who pass on the word to my bro zatlite and now everyone at the office started adding street names for their residential areas. As for me, I just observed the site but haven’t done any actual work on it since almost every streets in our area has already been added by my bro. Anyways, here is how this cool little thing works.

It’s a wiki sort of world street map where anyone can login to add/edit the streets in your region.

OpenStreetMap is a free editable map of the whole world. It is made by people like you.

OpenStreetMap allows you to view, edit and use geographical data in a collaborative way from anywhere on Earth.

To edit, you need to sign in first. Anyone can open an account there easily. You can also export the chosen map area into a few formats, (png, jpeg, svg, pdf, postscript) and can play around with the size, scale etc under “Export” tab.
You can also write some diaries on it or do some GPS tracing.

Ofcos’ if you are confused with how to do the tracing, you can always check out their wiki help page. In the Beginners’ Guide, there is an very well explained introductory video for you to get started with. I’m also checking out the video and briefly reading through the steps.

I did ask my bro, who actually done editing on the map, to write a post about it since it’s quite interesting to play around but as usual the lazy slime just passed me the video and ignored my request. So here I am dropping a note to whoever out there love playing with maps to check this site out.

Ciao!

Here is one good site I came across (via barnyar, I think). It’s a very neat blog (wp platform), well organized categories for authors, download links using Megaupload, very clean no ad (yet) and might become users generated content site like any other ebooks share sites in the future as they accept contribution from users. I’m very much impressed with the site as I find many good books I like. I found two books from my favorite author Juu. Gonna download them soon. One of the advantages for providing a site like that in blog format is that you can roll the feed and keep yourself updated regularly than the normal static sites. So good work whoever the owners are.

Just one small thing I like to see/suggest is to put the book covers in each post and if possible a brief intro/description of the book. But I know it could be too much hussel for the site owner as he got to manage lots of books and some books might not have covers. But just a thought anyways as it will make it much prettier and informative for each post. The site is very new so I bet they might be doing lots of improvments later on. (like replacing default wp blogroll list with related myanmar ebook site links etc)

It’s a good thing they have “Help” page explaining how to use Megaupload and also provided the login info. Very thoughtful indeed. Note: Once you click on the category link, it will direct you to a page with all entries for that particular category/author. Download links are disabled there and you have to click post title to get to proper page with enabled download link. So, don’t think that the downloads are unavailable, just click around and you’re set to go. Visit the site: Myanmar Ebooks

Oh check out the “Credits” page write up. I find it quite amusing especially the last sentence. Becareful, you might twist and tangle your tongue as I did. Let me count how many “mm-ebooks” word they used in that one paragraph……..they need one more “mm-ebook” word to have 10 in total so how about adding “Thank you, mm-ebook admin” in the end as the closing paragraph. hehe that should make it total of 10.

Check out the parent site ie. www.mmblogs.net too. I think they’re using WordPress MU and providing free blog service on my favorite wp platform which is very cool indeed. They got a good write up on what their site is all about and some rules and regulations. The only thing I don’t see that they should have is the network user links. Should provide the links of all those blogs that using their service. It’ll be good to see how people make use of their service don’t ya think so?

Anyways really appreciate the good effort from both sites. Do visit and check them out, I bet you’ll enjoy it. Just spreading the word with Link Love.

Here is one interesting contest I come across.

Every month, we’ll design a web page in Photoshop and host a competition to see who can turn it into the best web page. The designs we release will present specific markup challenges, along with design and coding considerations for everyone from web newbies to experienced developers.

The point of CSS Off is to make you think critically about web design, and then execute it on a dime. You’ve got 12 24 hours to take our design and slice it up.

The first contest starts at 1st June 2007. Can’t wait to see how it turn out. If time favors, I like to give it a try too.
To do so…I need to install Photoshop. I’ve been using Firework too much that I’m forgetting how to use Photoshop.
May be I’ll convert their .psd file into .png and slice it up. Will see their design first. Read details here.
Join along?

I’m just here to post a note on awareness and familiarization of GV site. I’m sure some of you have already heard about this great news source site – Global Voices Online. In case if you haven’t, here is abit of info.

Global Voices Online is a non-profit global citizens’ media project founded at Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, a research think-tank focused on the Internet’s impact on society.

Global Voices seeks to aggregate, curate, and amplify the global conversation online – shining light on places and people other media often ignore. We work to develop tools, institutions and relationships that will help all voices, everywhere, to be heard.

More info check out the FAQs section.

You may or may not notice that authors and editors from GV has been aggregating your sites and occasionally featuring/linking to your interesting posts. Those who have wordpress blogs will notice it quicker than those of blogger as there is a link tracking feature WP provides to detect the back links frequently. Ofcos’ you can always check Technorati for back-linking and tracking conversations.

GV is very search engines friendly site. The post published there will be on google search hit within an hour or so. That means, your link will get a bit of search branches and link bites. GV is also an internationally well known center for collecting news hence whatever featured on the site will reach to a vast medium of global readers.
At the moment, my regions of interest are:

East Asia (rather South East Asia) – Myanmar
[ Direct Page Link ] [ RSS ]

Oceania – Fiji
[ Direct Page Link ] [ RSS ]

Global Voices Online provides “RSS feeds” of all its content as it is posted to Country, Region and Topic sections.

Here is a list of feeds they roll for each region. [ GV feeds on Bloglines ]

I guess they haven’t updated the list for quite sometime now cos’ it is an old, incomplete compilation. They got only a few Myanmar feeds that time and no feed from Fiji in there. But ofcos each regional author has his own feed list. I have my own compilation for Myanmar blogs and also quite a few Fiji feeds. Due to last year coup in Fiji, many political blogs bloom up along with a few personal blogs. There is a good possibility of more Fiji blogs to come as awareness of blogging has been spreading through media – newspaper, forums, social networking and among youth groups.

The main difference between Myanmar and Fiji blogosphere is that, Fiji blogs are excelled in English; almost all of them post in English language with a few exceptions of Fijian language blogs. Where else for Myanmar blogosphere, a lot of new blogs emerge in Myanmar language and also some of the formerly English blogs are now transformed into native language blogs. Each has its own pros and cons; I won’t go farther into that.

Anyways, GV is starting to get interested in Fiji and South Pacific blogosphere as well as Myanmar Blogs. So if you find any interesting blogs/news from these regions especially from Myanmar, just give me a shout. The world is listening, so speak up your voices.

Alrite it’s very sleepy, sneaky, slimy, stupid kind of gloomy weather here at Suva today, plus it’s Friday evening so I’m getting bored typing this up. That’s all folks!

Oh Lunchers, your Lunch in Suva blog has already been noticed; how about that huh?

Our goal is to find individuals like yourself to help increase global awareness and create a greater understanding of the way the United States is viewed across the world. Our site allows people to write a letter addressed to the United States telling the world how they feel about any and all topics relating to the U.S.

Gizmo Call is a modernized way to make web-based calls developed by the team who brought you the Gizmo Project voice and IM software, as well as the SIPphone VoIP platform, a robust network and directory for efficiently carrying VoIP calls. www.gizmocall.com

I’ve tried to Singapore and Australia numbers, they all work like a charm. The voice quality is quite alrite too but can’t talk in unison. When I try myanmar number, I got this reply.

Sorry, We intentionally block calls to this country.

It’ll be abit nicer if the message goes like “Sorry, we don’t provide service to this country” or something like that but they use that “intentionally block” phrase. Man, that was just so mean.

I haven’t tested for Fiji numbers as I can do local calls easily but I’m sure it works fine. Oh when you register, don’t enter the last text-box ie. Enter your phone number, otherwise you cannot click on “register” button. Only when you remove it, the button becomes active. Anyways it’s pretty good if you wanna test calls to friends overseas. Enjoy calling.

<strike>I’m feeling really down these days. I got a lot of posts to write about and a few photos been prepared but just not in the mood to sit and type it up. I’m also reading some books and watching movies a lot these days that I couldn’t come back to my blog.</strike> I’ve been extremely lazy these days that I don’t even want to visit my own blog. This evening I feel a bit refreshed after a long shower and sat down to do some posting. So here I am, out of the blue, reanalysing what to write and where my blog stands as Mayvelous ages into her third year. It’s been a great three years journey together with Mayvelous.

I learn many things about blog, bloggers, blogging, blogosphere and a whole lot of blogging aspects. I’m also gradually improving in terms of habitual writing. I don’t mean writing as in proper literature with perfect grammar and smooth reading. I just mean as a regular habit of putting your thoughts down in your blog. Mayvelous keeps me awake, she lends me ears, she shares my joy, sorrow and laughters. She’s very lame with keeping secrets but she’s very good listener. She’s been a great friend anyone would ask for.

As time pass, I’m thinking what kind of path I’m driving Mayvelous into. I’ve read an old ebook by Seth Godin a few year back about types of blogs and I remembered I noted down some quotes from there. I’m sorry it’s been too long that I noted down these points and I’ve lost the direct link to the ebook so couldn’t provide you with proper reference link.

From the book, I got to know that there are 3 kinds of blogs namely :

Cat Blogs

Boss Blogs

Viral Blogs

CAT BLOGS are blogs for and by and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever you feel like sharing in your public diary. The vast majority of people with a cat blog don’t need or want strangers to read it. If you’ve got a cat blog, you should embrace that fact and stop wondering where all your traffic is.

BOSS BLOGS are blogs used to communicate to a defined circle of people. A boss blog is a fantastic communications tool.

Mainly used for projects and activities to share latest news with team members or activity partners

VIRAL BLOGS: They’re viral blogs because the goal of the blog is to spread ideas. The blogger is investing time and energy in order to get her ideas out there. Why? Lots of reasons—to get consulting work, to change the outcome of an election, to find new customers for a business or to make it easier for existing customers to feel good about staying.

Some of these blogs are for individuals (call them citizen journalists or op-ed pages) and others are for organizations trying to share their ideas and agendas. These are the blogs that are changing the face of marketing, journalism and the spread of ideas.

If you’re writing for strangers, that means you’re building a viral blog. The first principle is to make your entries shorter. Use images and tone and design and interface to make your point. Teach people gradually.

On the other hand, if you’re writing for colleagues, you’ve got a boss blog. That means you can make your entries more robust.

Reading through these and thinking what kind of blog do I own makes me confused. Mayvelous is personal diary-like blog though I don’t write too personal matters, yet I do write about my daily issues and occasional outburst of personal feelings. So it goes into the category of CAT-Blogs.

Mayvelous also talks about work matters and project/technology related news which mainly concentrate on programmers, web developers and IT professionals. So it’s kind of gets under BOSS-Blogs category as well.

Blog by nature is very public, hence you’re writing for various types of strangers. Some may find your post informative and some might not. It’s all depends on which type of “strangers” your blog attracts more.

You’re not interested/attracting anyone then the blog is obviously a CAT-Blog. When it attracts more of your friends and family attention, it becomes the BOSS-Blog. Ofcos, once it catches the attention from general public then you become the VIRAL-Blogger. In my opinion, all blogs aim to be Viral some day. The three blog types are very much inter-related; many blogs start as CAT-Blogs then move their way up to Boss-Blogs and finally be the Viral-Blog.

So, where is Mayvelous? Mayvelous is still in the state of the BOSS petting her CAT. Sometimes the cat runs away and a few times the boss wants to quit. I’m hoping to move mayvelous towards a wider circle of audience with informative content to become the VIRAL-Blog in near future.

So this is what I’ve discovered about types of blogs. Which type does your blog fall under and is it in the correct path that you want it to be? Just something to think about anyways.

Recently a bug in certain versions of PHP came to our attention that could cause a security vulnerability in your blog. We’re able to work around it fairly easily, so we’ve decided to release 2.0.7 to fix the PHP security problem and the Feedburner issue that was in 2.0.6.

Here is the list of files that have changed since 2.0.6:

wp-admin/inline-uploading.php

wp-admin/post.php

wp-includes/classes.php

wp-includes/functions.php

wp-includes/version.php

ZipToPhone is a free text messaging service. Using this tool, you can easily send text messages and send MMS messages to a cell phone. This is ideal for sending custom ringtones, games, wallpapers, logos, photos, or any other file that your cell phone can process. It’s also perfect for sending a quick message to a friend when you are without your phone.

Very clean, no registration required, no ads and nothing what soever at all. Very simple and sweet. Works like a charm. I tried it to my gangs in Fiji. All works and very fast too. Most of free sms sites doesn’t offer service to send to Fiji but this one does, so i’m sure if Fiji can receive it, other countries will be just fine.

Currently, there is a limit of 5 messages per day per IP address. We’ll be rolling out the option to upgrade your account and send more messages soon.

But ofcos, there is a limit of 5 messages per day from one IP. It’s very new site, so may be they’re still test driving.

This is the latest release in our stable 2.0 line, which we’ve committed to maintaining for several more years.

Here’s what’s new:

The aforementioned security fixes.

HTML quicktags now work in Safari browsers.

Comments are filtered to prevent them from messing up your blog layout.

Compatibility with PHP/FastCGI setups.

For developers, there’s a new anti-XSS function called attribute_escape(), and a new filter called “query” which allows you filter any SQL at runtime.

Right, so gotta upgrade it this weekend. Just a note for you guys anyways.

There is this “Original audio source” link with flash-based audio player showing up for some posts that have audio links. I saw that on a few posts but I thought it was the blogger’s doing. But now I just saw that on my own music pick post and realised that it was actually one of Greader features.

Pretty cool huh? You can play <strike>all the mp3</strike> the first mp3 source on the page directly without the need of downloading. Sweet!
