This is definitely something interesting for me to try out; I just read a short post on Blogging Pro about Microsoft Web Application Installerand thought it might interest some of you so just passing on.

Previously, to deploy a php application eg. wordpress, on Windows, we have to use something like XAMPP (that’s what I used anyways) and the like, do some configurations, pull hair and throw some fits to be able to deploy successfully.

Now they’ve released this thing called Microsoft Web Application Installer, which is a freeware and suppose to ease those pain while deploying.

The Web Application Installer Beta is designed to help get you up and running with the most widely used Web Applications freely available for your Windows Server.

This little apps, “Open Street Map” is getting popular among my colleagues and quite becoming the topic of discussion this morning. It’s all started from strangepants who pass on the word to my bro zatlite and now everyone at the office started adding street names for their residential areas. As for me, I just observed the site but haven’t done any actual work on it since almost every streets in our area has already been added by my bro. Anyways, here is how this cool little thing works.

It’s a wiki sort of world street map where anyone can login to add/edit the streets in your region.

OpenStreetMap is a free editable map of the whole world. It is made by people like you.

OpenStreetMap allows you to view, edit and use geographical data in a collaborative way from anywhere on Earth.

To edit, you need to sign in first. Anyone can open an account there easily. You can also export the chosen map area into a few formats, (png, jpeg, svg, pdf, postscript) and can play around with the size, scale etc under “Export” tab.
You can also write some diaries on it or do some GPS tracing.

Ofcos’ if you are confused with how to do the tracing, you can always check out their wiki help page. In the Beginners’ Guide, there is an very well explained introductory video for you to get started with. I’m also checking out the video and briefly reading through the steps.

I did ask my bro, who actually done editing on the map, to write a post about it since it’s quite interesting to play around but as usual the lazy slime just passed me the video and ignored my request. So here I am dropping a note to whoever out there love playing with maps to check this site out.

Ciao!

Yippie! It’s Friday again!. Been occupied with things this week, I didn’t even realized that the week is almost over.

This whole week, I got to work on time. Oh yes, ON TIME!. Our normal office hours is 8:00 – 5:00; Normally I get to work around 8:30 – 9:30 in the morning and knock out around 5:30 – 6:00 in the evening. It’s amazing that I’m on-time this week and proud for myself. You go gal!

Come to think of it, I never wake up myself in the mornings. Every morning at 6:30, Dad bangs at my door and tries to wake me up. I never move an inch from those bangings. Around 7:00, my mb alarm shrills in my ears; what a tedious job to switch it off and go back to sleep. Around 8:00, my bro comes in and yell at my ear. He would ask whether I’ll go with Dad transport or take a taxi later. His yelling is the worst and I can’t shut him off. If I don’t budge by a few yells, he would kick me and pull me down from bed. Most dreadful thing he does is jump on my bed with his slippers on. What an arsehole! There go my peaceful sleep, I would wake up in flash and kick him off. I for once, hate the idea of wrinkling the bed sheet. I hardly let anyone sit on my bed and when I sleep, I try not to move a lot so I can keep my bed sheet free of wrinkles. For that reason, him and I are the worst enemies unless he gets rid of his annoying habit. Anyways, this week my being on time is cos’ I wake up at the alarm time and come by Dad’s transport.

Ok enough about my sleeping habits, now back to the point. After catching up feeds on Google Reader and done a few blog hopping, some thoughts come into head.

I see many blogs use gravatar enabled comment system. I like looking at posts with variety of gravaters in their comments. It’s very eye inspiring and brings more motivation to read the post. But unfortunately some regular bloggers/commenters don’t bother to make a good use of the gravatar feature. It’s very easy to get a gravatar for your email and doesn’t take much of your time setting up. I made mine years ago when I started using the gravatar plugin for my blog and never changed since. It doesn’t need any maintenance or regular logins to keep up the password expirations or worry about photo hosting. I’m surprised at those who choose to ignore the existence of this wonderful and convenient service. Give it a try when you have time, you won’t regret it. Get a Gravatar account.

Another thought that hits me is about centralizing blog feeds. Some of you (including myself) have multiple blogs which from time to time you need to change blog domain, the host or even the blog platform. In such cases, it’s best to use a good service like Feedburner to centralize your feed. It’s very convenient and helps both blogger and subscribers in terms of less work, more acturate blog subscription tracking and easy to maintain/manage feeds. I got two feedburner links which I published on my old theme and haven’t add in this new theme yet. I’ll do that later.

By having a centralized feed, the blogger does not need to worry about notifying his readers with the new feed changes. He only needs to update the new feed link in the Feedburner control panel and it will process it accordingly. For example, my blog mayvelous.blogspot.com has .atom.xml feed previously. With the new blogger.com, it was changed to RSS feed with different link format. Both the old and the new feeds work fine, which is excellent, the readers can choose any of the two to subscribe. But having such multiple feeds make it very hard to track the total number of subscriber on your blog.

Another bad thing about individual-unburn feed is – when you change your blog domain, all the feed url also get updated hence might cut the original feed subscribers from your blog. There is a possibility of your old feed still functioning if you are only redirecting a domain but in case of changing an entire blog platform, there is no way your old feed can work as before. If that happens, it’s very hard for a blogger to request the readers to update their subscription. Probably the blog will lose half of the readers due to people (myself as one) plain old laziness in updating things.

Hence centralizing your feed is <strike>essential</strike> a good thing to consider and the feedburner is known to be a very useful service for many bloggers. So organize your feed by burning your feeds in a feedburner account. You can also use this site to combine multiple feeds before burning one in Feedburner.

Alrite, the post getting too long and I’m getting bored with typing so I’ll continue my other Friday thoughts later.

Kinda of feel odd, trying to translate back from my Myanmar post to English. Or should I express things in English first then translate to Myanmar? Nah, the feeling is just wrong. I think I shouldn’t translate but just write whatever comes in mind as long as the post gives the same message. I wonder how Mady done it cos’ both of her Myanmar and English posts are very well sync. Anyhow, I’ll try again later and see how it go.

Enjoy your Friday and have a good weekend!

A friend of mine invited me to Twitter a while back and I wasn’t really interested for it has an ugly interface and the site is ugly and … it was ugly and … just ugly and … well I decided not to like it.

Anyhow, I subscribed to their newsletter updates and from today’s issue, I came across this Twitter Apps page.

I was surprised to find that there are quite a number of applications developed for this ugly Twitty thingie and I learn some new words from there, like – Twadget, Twitterlex, TwitDir, Twitterverse, Twitigg, Twotteroo, TwittIt, Twitterlicious, TwitterBerry, JTwitter, iTwit, Twippera, TwittyTunes, TwitterFox etc…and I got myself a <strike>twitted</strike> twisted tongue.

Since I’m not a fan of Desktop Apps, and more of Web/Browser Apps, I decided to check out a few FF extensions from there. I installed TwittyTunes, Power Twitter Plugin for Firefox and Twitterbar Addon for Firefox/Flock.

I’m one of those who are too lazy to read through instructions but want to see result instantly, so after the installation I expected to see obvious result. The only obvious result I can see with above three extensions is from TwittyTunes where it created its icon at the bottom-right of my browser status bar. Its functionalities are just so cool and easy to use with one click away.

As for the other two extensions, no obvious new icons or context-menus were shown; only when I customize the toolbar then I found the icon of TwitterBar which I need to drag out to the tool bar. I was expecting to try out Power Twitter’s cool functionalities such as posting images, audio and video to Twitter as mentioned on their page, but was disappointed to find that there is no obvious function to play around with. I can’t even find its icon and I don’t know how to test that out. May be my bad eyes.

Anyway I uninstalled the other two and stick with TwittyTune. I posted a twit or two with it and immediately I was hooked.

All thanks to lovely TwittyTune, I am beginning to find Twitting interesting. Previously I post random thoughts on one of my blogs but Twitter is more convenient way of posting randomness and nonsense. So I decided to make a good use of it. And here it goes, my one and very own “TwittVelous” to publicize my cunning craziness!!! Ke Ke Ke…Fu Fu Fu < — Japanese way of laughing

Oh yah, if you wanna follow my nonsense then go ahead here is my RVelous, I mean RSS.

Ciao!

I had to ask two of my friends from US to check for the time. But their times are also different so they can only tell me the estimates. I did sent the entry a few hours before due time (I hope).

I don’t care whether it went in on-time or not; I’m just satisfied with myself that I’ve done something on my weekend and enjoyed it. It was interesting; took me a couple of hours to think the possible ways to slice and shape it up. I got bored on half way but my bro said I should finish up and done with it, so I did.

I’m not that satisfy with my CSS structure but I think I tried my best. It’s valid xhtml transitional. I don’t know why I didn’t make it xhtml strict…I guess I forgot and used to with my normal xhtml transitional Doctype. I thought of asking a friend to recheck my code but I dismissed that thought cos’ it’s a competition and I should participate it fair and square to find out what I’m capable of. I’ll upload my entry on my site soon.

Here is my entry: CSSOFF – Jabroni (2007-06-01)

Anyways, my weekend was meaningful and busy one…yah not bad. How’s your weekend go? Oh, Do you know any good world time site/application that list different types of time zones and country times? I’m too lazy to google.

It’s going offline. You now have an option to read your feeds in offline or online mode.

We’ve used the newly released Google Gears, a browser plugin that enables offline web applications. Once you’ve installed Google Gears, you can download your latest 2,000 items so they’re available even when you don’t have an internet connection. To get started, simply click the “Offline” link in the top right of Google Reader.

You’ll need to download the Google Gears Setup file (188kb) which then download and install the plugin directly. This would take a while if your connection is slow.

Google Gears (Beta) is an open source browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality using following JavaScript APIs:
# Store and server application resources locally
# Store data locally in a fully-searchable relational database
# Run asynchronous Javascript to improve application responsiveness

Once it’s done, you need to restart your browser and allow the plugin on the site. You then have the option to download your feeds and save them for offline reading.

Here is one good site I came across (via barnyar, I think). It’s a very neat blog (wp platform), well organized categories for authors, download links using Megaupload, very clean no ad (yet) and might become users generated content site like any other ebooks share sites in the future as they accept contribution from users. I’m very much impressed with the site as I find many good books I like. I found two books from my favorite author Juu. Gonna download them soon. One of the advantages for providing a site like that in blog format is that you can roll the feed and keep yourself updated regularly than the normal static sites. So good work whoever the owners are.

Just one small thing I like to see/suggest is to put the book covers in each post and if possible a brief intro/description of the book. But I know it could be too much hussel for the site owner as he got to manage lots of books and some books might not have covers. But just a thought anyways as it will make it much prettier and informative for each post. The site is very new so I bet they might be doing lots of improvments later on. (like replacing default wp blogroll list with related myanmar ebook site links etc)

It’s a good thing they have “Help” page explaining how to use Megaupload and also provided the login info. Very thoughtful indeed. Note: Once you click on the category link, it will direct you to a page with all entries for that particular category/author. Download links are disabled there and you have to click post title to get to proper page with enabled download link. So, don’t think that the downloads are unavailable, just click around and you’re set to go. Visit the site: Myanmar Ebooks

Oh check out the “Credits” page write up. I find it quite amusing especially the last sentence. Becareful, you might twist and tangle your tongue as I did. Let me count how many “mm-ebooks” word they used in that one paragraph……..they need one more “mm-ebook” word to have 10 in total so how about adding “Thank you, mm-ebook admin” in the end as the closing paragraph. hehe that should make it total of 10.

Check out the parent site ie. www.mmblogs.net too. I think they’re using WordPress MU and providing free blog service on my favorite wp platform which is very cool indeed. They got a good write up on what their site is all about and some rules and regulations. The only thing I don’t see that they should have is the network user links. Should provide the links of all those blogs that using their service. It’ll be good to see how people make use of their service don’t ya think so?

Anyways really appreciate the good effort from both sites. Do visit and check them out, I bet you’ll enjoy it. Just spreading the word with Link Love.

Here is one interesting contest I come across.

Every month, we’ll design a web page in Photoshop and host a competition to see who can turn it into the best web page. The designs we release will present specific markup challenges, along with design and coding considerations for everyone from web newbies to experienced developers.

The point of CSS Off is to make you think critically about web design, and then execute it on a dime. You’ve got 12 24 hours to take our design and slice it up.

The first contest starts at 1st June 2007. Can’t wait to see how it turn out. If time favors, I like to give it a try too.
To do so…I need to install Photoshop. I’ve been using Firework too much that I’m forgetting how to use Photoshop.
May be I’ll convert their .psd file into .png and slice it up. Will see their design first. Read details here.
Join along?

I’m utterly annoyed by amount of spam mayvelous is getting everyday. If not for Akismet plugin, my blog will be bombarded with all those shitty spam comments. I can’t believe people have that much time in hand to send junks like that. Everyday Akismet catches about 200 – 400 spams for me. Whatever go into Akismet spam list, I just click once and delete them all. I don’t waste my time going through the list so it’s easy enough to clean them up. But lately, not only spams but they’ve been hitting me with track-backs.

The worst thing about track-backs is that they show up on my front page – recent comments list. If I don’t realize or forget to check the mail, all those filthy links will be showing up and spoiling my site. I’m not sure whether those people actually benefit from those kind of spamming other sites with shit load of junks. I wonder whether they do this to promote their business or doing just for fun and annoy others.

They chew up my bandwidth, mess up my stats, disgusted my site and most important of all, they really piss me off. I hope, whoever behind this, they rot in spam hell. One spam to my site, hope they get back 100 times more to their site and quickly bankrupt their rotten business!!!

I’m just here to post a note on awareness and familiarization of GV site. I’m sure some of you have already heard about this great news source site – Global Voices Online. In case if you haven’t, here is abit of info.

Global Voices Online is a non-profit global citizens’ media project founded at Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, a research think-tank focused on the Internet’s impact on society.

Global Voices seeks to aggregate, curate, and amplify the global conversation online – shining light on places and people other media often ignore. We work to develop tools, institutions and relationships that will help all voices, everywhere, to be heard.

More info check out the FAQs section.

You may or may not notice that authors and editors from GV has been aggregating your sites and occasionally featuring/linking to your interesting posts. Those who have wordpress blogs will notice it quicker than those of blogger as there is a link tracking feature WP provides to detect the back links frequently. Ofcos’ you can always check Technorati for back-linking and tracking conversations.

GV is very search engines friendly site. The post published there will be on google search hit within an hour or so. That means, your link will get a bit of search branches and link bites. GV is also an internationally well known center for collecting news hence whatever featured on the site will reach to a vast medium of global readers.
At the moment, my regions of interest are:

East Asia (rather South East Asia) – Myanmar
[ Direct Page Link ] [ RSS ]

Oceania – Fiji
[ Direct Page Link ] [ RSS ]

Global Voices Online provides “RSS feeds” of all its content as it is posted to Country, Region and Topic sections.

Here is a list of feeds they roll for each region. [ GV feeds on Bloglines ]

I guess they haven’t updated the list for quite sometime now cos’ it is an old, incomplete compilation. They got only a few Myanmar feeds that time and no feed from Fiji in there. But ofcos each regional author has his own feed list. I have my own compilation for Myanmar blogs and also quite a few Fiji feeds. Due to last year coup in Fiji, many political blogs bloom up along with a few personal blogs. There is a good possibility of more Fiji blogs to come as awareness of blogging has been spreading through media – newspaper, forums, social networking and among youth groups.

The main difference between Myanmar and Fiji blogosphere is that, Fiji blogs are excelled in English; almost all of them post in English language with a few exceptions of Fijian language blogs. Where else for Myanmar blogosphere, a lot of new blogs emerge in Myanmar language and also some of the formerly English blogs are now transformed into native language blogs. Each has its own pros and cons; I won’t go farther into that.

Anyways, GV is starting to get interested in Fiji and South Pacific blogosphere as well as Myanmar Blogs. So if you find any interesting blogs/news from these regions especially from Myanmar, just give me a shout. The world is listening, so speak up your voices.

Alrite it’s very sleepy, sneaky, slimy, stupid kind of gloomy weather here at Suva today, plus it’s Friday evening so I’m getting bored typing this up. That’s all folks!

Oh Lunchers, your Lunch in Suva blog has already been noticed; how about that huh?
