Did I mentioned I purchased 2 years DreamHost plan? I think I’ve twitted about it. I got some good promo code and got a good deal of $42.96 for 2yrs. That great deal is already passed but if you happen to purchase a year plan, you can try this code 117M, that should chop down a few bucks.

I’ve been wanting to switch over DreamHost for ages but due to my limited knowledge on LAMP platform and DreamHost price is a bit expensive compare to my .net host, I couldn’t dare to test it out. But with this good promotion deal, I can afford to play around on DreamHost for 2years.

I want to keep my current DotNetPark windows hosting too in case if I happen to host .net site but I don’t plan to publish a new site anytime soon; I only have this mayvelous blog and 1 hosting should be sufficient enough.

Anyhow, now mayvelous.com is sitting on DreamHost and I’ve placed quite a lot of plugins which I couldn’t with previous Windows host. Mayvlous is now with,

Post Rating stars

Affiliate Logos & Links at the side bar

A few widget ads programs which can only seen by certain countries

and many new plugins I’m still playing. I want to change my theme too but I still love the current one and too lazy to search for good themes so I’ll leave it as it is for now. Ok, Just drop by to say hello and let you know the updates…right, that’s about it.

Oh lord, did I just see a beard? The mouth and the hair look quite similar but I don’t have a beard for sure.

N3 suggests to try your name in Burmese as well, so I did and it came out as a robot.

I’m utterly annoyed by amount of spam mayvelous is getting everyday. If not for Akismet plugin, my blog will be bombarded with all those shitty spam comments. I can’t believe people have that much time in hand to send junks like that. Everyday Akismet catches about 200 – 400 spams for me. Whatever go into Akismet spam list, I just click once and delete them all. I don’t waste my time going through the list so it’s easy enough to clean them up. But lately, not only spams but they’ve been hitting me with track-backs.

The worst thing about track-backs is that they show up on my front page – recent comments list. If I don’t realize or forget to check the mail, all those filthy links will be showing up and spoiling my site. I’m not sure whether those people actually benefit from those kind of spamming other sites with shit load of junks. I wonder whether they do this to promote their business or doing just for fun and annoy others.

They chew up my bandwidth, mess up my stats, disgusted my site and most important of all, they really piss me off. I hope, whoever behind this, they rot in spam hell. One spam to my site, hope they get back 100 times more to their site and quickly bankrupt their rotten business!!!

The idea behind this event is to promote Web Standards. Plain and simple. This includes proper use of (x)html, semantic markup, a good hierarchy structure, and of course, a good ‘ol play on words. It’s time to show off your body.

Sorry for the late post this week. No excuses, I’m just being lazy to post. Anyways, this week pick includes a lovely Tongan song and more of 7ven’s old songs. You can also check out previous posts here:
This week I got two songs from Phwe’s old collections. “Ta Di Ya Nay Mhar Par” is about rememberence of the old university by Mie Mie Win Phay and Phwe sang it pretty well, though I think the song should be abit slower cos’ it’s suppose to be a sad song. “Pa Soe Nae Tite Pong” is Phwe’s favorite. The song is about wearing Burmese traditional dress – a gal is telling her bf to wear proper dress when he come see her parents. Her parents don’t like baggy cloths and next time if he doesn’t wear proper clothing, she will not accept him. It’s a good song though I find it kinda funny.

[ MP3 ] Phwe – Ta Di Ya Nay Mhar Par

Tu’I kolongahau kaikoa
A friend from Tonga forwarded me this beautiful song. This is the first time for me to listen a Tongan song and I like it. Sometimes back, one of my friend sent me a PNG song which also has the similar name Maria or Mae in it. Unfortunately I misplaced the file and couldn’t find it back. But I think PNG and Tongan dialect are a bit similar…may be not. I also lost a CD with many good songs from South Pacific – Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia and all those small island nations. I’ve been losing things lately, hmm so bad! Anyways, I requested the song details and here is what he sent me. Sweet isn’t it. I bet his gal must be really touched by it.

[ WMA ] Tu’I kolongahau kaikoa – Oh, my dear Maria

About the song:This song has been played throughout the three local and secular radio stations in Tonga: FM 88.6, FM 90 and AM 110.03

I wrote this in dedication to my current girlfriend. Her name is Demarise, who is currently studying in Africa. Due to the long distance relationship, and being, what we call it, ‘lovesick’ most of the time, I decided to put all my thoughts into a song, with my heart etched to it. The chorus of the song has her name in it.

I never thought this song would be recognized. I guess it’s just that I put my whole heart into it, where there are also others out there who can identify themselves with me. We all go through times when you think you will go crazy just missing somebody you love so much. I have translated the lyrics of the song in English, though I wish you knew Tongan because the heat of the matter is better explained in my mother tongue language, Tongan.

Read, listen and enjoy. And to all you lovebirds out there, just hang in there!

English Translation

Oh, my dear Maria

As the wind blows from the northern hemisphere
My thoughts are just filled with you
I don’t see anything else but your face in my dreams
It actually relieves me of the pain I feel (in heart and mind)

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh, my Maria…

In the evening when the sun is about to set
It reminds me of your beautiful smile
I think of nothing and nobody else but you alone
Yes, the love of my heart (my lover)

Oh how I wish that I were near you
The thought of it just takes my breath away
Yes, I so cannot wait for that day
When I pledge you myself (body, heart, mind and soul)

# NB. The file is in .wma format and it got some keys in it. Just download it and you should be able to play as many times as you wish.
Thanks Hayden and Tu’i-K-K for the song.

May – G7ven
And finally this two is from me. “A Pyin Pyay Nya Nay” is about a girl day dreaming in a boring evening and sings about the thing she sees on the street. It’s L Sine Ze’s song and my recording is crap, overriding her vocal. “Nha Ko Tu Chit Ta Mhya” is very OLD song from a very OLD movie – “Thingyan Moe”, singing about two love birds. It’s a duet song but I sang for both. I can’t keep up the vocals … oh well…who cares!

I said no more music pick last time rite? Well…I lied, kind of. I was digging up old emails and I came across some of my friends’ songs; then the idea struck me – to do music picks on those. You see, a few of my friends are really musical and they have such good talents that are hidden behind their busy selves. I, as their good friend, have a responsibility to promote those hidden talents and show them off to the public. You never know, one day they’ll thank me or swear at me. hehe.

Phwe – Icy7ven
She’s one of my 7ven friends and is a great singer in our group. Her best interests are to sing, chat and diet. She can sing for hours, no need any water or backup. She sings at home, in the loo, in bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, her friends’ places, and any place she can possibly think of singing. At the moment she is concentrating on her study. Due to her parents’ no-singing policy, she has to finish her studies first then follow her dreams. Already she got bookings from her friends to sing at their special occasions.

Missy sang at last year Thingyan festival too, I bet she’s practicing for this year Thingyan as well. You can request her to sing any song you have in mind. Oh yah she can sing quadri-lingual, Myanmar, English, Indian and Nepalese. How cool is that! Last time she sang me “Kush kush ho te hel” song and I think even Ashwaya Rai need to practice more on her vocal to catch up our Missy. hehe

Glass Alley
This is one of my friend’s high school band, sort of. A group of hsch friends teamed up to do a bit of recording. Sadly, the band is pretty much no more due to their members getting married and entering the chaos of daily life. The members were Meli, Albert, Jonathan, Steve and Forlani (my friend). I think Forlani played bass and did the intro part. Don’t know who the vocalist is but he’s got a potential. Sounded like John Mayer’s voice. There you go, shout me something good. Haha

These two songs are from one of their live shows. The recording is not that good in some parts but I think it’s alright. Both are their own creations so no replication please.

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, lend me your ears. I have a great pleasure to introduce this amazing, talented, beautiful, magnificent, gorgeous, the marvelous (Cut, cut!), ME. A ha` ha`

Hey nothing wrong with promoting yourself alrite. There is this marketing theory – the more you promote yourself, the more people will buy from you. (or something like that) Not that I got anything to sell you, I’m just giving an example…well you know what I mean. I don’t think you need farther intro for me. I don’t sing anywhere and singing is not my specialty. I listen most of the time and am a good listener. Just for fun, I do sing from time to time for my own pleasure. I got a great support from my family, especially bro and sis to shut myself up whenever I try to sing.

In Hlet Kyi Par Oo, ahoot* cough* cough* I was screaming that much but that person never look back. What a fool. I got a sore throat after that. A friend sent me a scratched background music so it came out terrible. All my recordings sux. Well who cares! Do excuse me, if you hear some dog barking at the background. My dog wanted to sing too (or may be complaining my singing), so just to satisfy her, I have to record a few of her woofs* as well.

Alrite, that’s all for this week. Hope you enjoy listening all our songs and our sweet voices (especially mine rite?).hehe

I requested some songs from a few friends of mine so you’ll get to listen more from simple and ordinary talents in weeks ahead. Oh yah, if you’re interested to join us, do send me your songs. It doesn’t have to be your own creation. It can be Karaoke versions too. I just wanna hear your voices. Like my friend said, “any publicity is a good publicity”, so don’t be shy, lend me your voices.

Send me your voices and a bit of your info to mayvelous [at] gmail [dot] com

Ciao!

<strike>I’m feeling really down these days. I got a lot of posts to write about and a few photos been prepared but just not in the mood to sit and type it up. I’m also reading some books and watching movies a lot these days that I couldn’t come back to my blog.</strike> I’ve been extremely lazy these days that I don’t even want to visit my own blog. This evening I feel a bit refreshed after a long shower and sat down to do some posting. So here I am, out of the blue, reanalysing what to write and where my blog stands as Mayvelous ages into her third year. It’s been a great three years journey together with Mayvelous.

I learn many things about blog, bloggers, blogging, blogosphere and a whole lot of blogging aspects. I’m also gradually improving in terms of habitual writing. I don’t mean writing as in proper literature with perfect grammar and smooth reading. I just mean as a regular habit of putting your thoughts down in your blog. Mayvelous keeps me awake, she lends me ears, she shares my joy, sorrow and laughters. She’s very lame with keeping secrets but she’s very good listener. She’s been a great friend anyone would ask for.

As time pass, I’m thinking what kind of path I’m driving Mayvelous into. I’ve read an old ebook by Seth Godin a few year back about types of blogs and I remembered I noted down some quotes from there. I’m sorry it’s been too long that I noted down these points and I’ve lost the direct link to the ebook so couldn’t provide you with proper reference link.

From the book, I got to know that there are 3 kinds of blogs namely :

Cat Blogs

Boss Blogs

Viral Blogs

CAT BLOGS are blogs for and by and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever you feel like sharing in your public diary. The vast majority of people with a cat blog don’t need or want strangers to read it. If you’ve got a cat blog, you should embrace that fact and stop wondering where all your traffic is.

BOSS BLOGS are blogs used to communicate to a defined circle of people. A boss blog is a fantastic communications tool.

Mainly used for projects and activities to share latest news with team members or activity partners

VIRAL BLOGS: They’re viral blogs because the goal of the blog is to spread ideas. The blogger is investing time and energy in order to get her ideas out there. Why? Lots of reasons—to get consulting work, to change the outcome of an election, to find new customers for a business or to make it easier for existing customers to feel good about staying.

Some of these blogs are for individuals (call them citizen journalists or op-ed pages) and others are for organizations trying to share their ideas and agendas. These are the blogs that are changing the face of marketing, journalism and the spread of ideas.

If you’re writing for strangers, that means you’re building a viral blog. The first principle is to make your entries shorter. Use images and tone and design and interface to make your point. Teach people gradually.

On the other hand, if you’re writing for colleagues, you’ve got a boss blog. That means you can make your entries more robust.

Reading through these and thinking what kind of blog do I own makes me confused. Mayvelous is personal diary-like blog though I don’t write too personal matters, yet I do write about my daily issues and occasional outburst of personal feelings. So it goes into the category of CAT-Blogs.

Mayvelous also talks about work matters and project/technology related news which mainly concentrate on programmers, web developers and IT professionals. So it’s kind of gets under BOSS-Blogs category as well.

Blog by nature is very public, hence you’re writing for various types of strangers. Some may find your post informative and some might not. It’s all depends on which type of “strangers” your blog attracts more.

You’re not interested/attracting anyone then the blog is obviously a CAT-Blog. When it attracts more of your friends and family attention, it becomes the BOSS-Blog. Ofcos, once it catches the attention from general public then you become the VIRAL-Blogger. In my opinion, all blogs aim to be Viral some day. The three blog types are very much inter-related; many blogs start as CAT-Blogs then move their way up to Boss-Blogs and finally be the Viral-Blog.

So, where is Mayvelous? Mayvelous is still in the state of the BOSS petting her CAT. Sometimes the cat runs away and a few times the boss wants to quit. I’m hoping to move mayvelous towards a wider circle of audience with informative content to become the VIRAL-Blog in near future.

So this is what I’ve discovered about types of blogs. Which type does your blog fall under and is it in the correct path that you want it to be? Just something to think about anyways.

I’m not a freelancer, well not yet but like to be in the future, but these 7 points by Successful Andy Budd are very worth taking note of whether you are a freelancer or not.

#1. Love what you do
To be a successful freelancer, you need to have a passion for what you do…

I love what I do. Yes, I really do. I never thought I’ll be doing what I’m doing when I was in high school as I didn’t even like looking at the computers. But once I start digging into this profession, I beginning to like it and yes I’m loving what I do.

I do have a passion. Right now I have a deep passion to eat one good “Kyar-San-Chat”. hehe Ok sorry, just a bit hungry at the moment.

#2. Never stop learning
Every day new ideas or techniques are discovered and sometimes it’s hard to keep pace…the best web designers are endlessly inquisitive and always want to keep abreast of the latest trends and technologies…

Sometimes, I wonder what will be like when I don’t want to learn anymore. IT and Computer profession is very different from any others. IT industry is very rapid and fast growing, every minute, everyday. If you cannot keep up with the speed you are rather useless in a few months time. Having a degree in IT field is nothing like having a degree in other fields like Accounting, Medicine, Nurseing. In those, you can make use of what you learn in school for a long time, unless ofcos, there is a new disease to cure/study or a new program is introduced to calculate accounts.

In IT, a degree is just a piece of paper to frame and is rather useless if you cannot keep up/don’t know what it’s like out there in the real world. Sometimes, it’s so tiring to find out how far behind you are with the latest technology. While you’re learning one thing and not even specialize on that yet, many other new things pop up and the thing you learning becomes usless. I wonder many times, how do I even keep up with this rate. But you know what, the most important thing is as long as you have a passion for learning new thing, you’ll be just fine.

#3. Specialise
Some skills are more in demand than others, but if you’re the top of your field in a particular language or skill, you’ll always be in demand.

Very true, as long as you’re the best in one field, you’re sure to make a living out of it. Lets’ see what I’m specialise at…

#4. Get a killer portfolio
The best way to do this is to contact friends and family and offer to build them a website. I’m not suggesting you do this for FREE as this is potentially damaging to the industry and can also leave you in the difficult situation where your work isn’t valued….create your own personal project or sandbox where you can demonstrate your ideas. I’ve hired freelancers in the past based solely on the basis of their personal work…

This is something I lack. I don’t have any portfolio of my own. Well, you can’t show off what you done for your company since it might be somewhat illegal? or they might not want you to since you are working under their terms and conditions. But if you are to be freelancer then you seriously need your own portfolio. Atleast have a website/blog of your own where you publish your latest informative muses, so people know you are still alive and up-to-date.

Lets’ see…I wanna build up my portfolio, who wanna hire me? Mom? Dad? Bro?? No free job, KFC would do.

#5. Network like crazy
As the old saying goes, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. This couldn’t be more true as a freelance web designer. The best way to get work is to use your contacts and network like crazy.

I’m really bad with networking. Actully I suck at it. I don’t know, I’m just not a people kind of person. I seriously need to work on this skill. Yes, a good point to note.

#6. Manage your time
As well as doing the work you get paid for, you also need to market yourself, manage your projects, do your accounts and everything else that’s involved in running a small business…One of the benefits of being a freelancer is being your own boss, so make sure you’re both strict and fair…

Freelancing is flexable yet very dangerous if your time management skills are weak. The article explains it well, so better read on it.

#7. Build your reputation
One of the best ways of becoming a successful freelancer is to become the person people want to do business with. You can also build your reputation by sharing your experiences and knowledge through writing articles, blogging and speaking at local events. By building your reputation as an expert, people will be happy using your services and recommending you to others. Blogging is a particularly good way of doing this and is something I highly recommend.

Whoa! In this case, I’m on the right track (kind of). I just build up my reputation as a jack-ass a few days ago. Hey still, I’m building up my reputation rite? ha` ha`. Yep, it’s way better to check out your blog to determine your personalities + many other things than checking your beautiful resume. You blog talks about who you really are and has a greater impact on people than reading a few pages of your resume.

I have a blog, I rock! I have a reputation, I kick arse!
Now, am I a potential successful freelancer or am I a potential successful freelancer?!? (wink*)
