Me, Myself and Mayvelous

This is definitely something interesting for me to try out; I just read a short post on Blogging Pro about Microsoft Web Application Installerand thought it might interest some of you so just passing on.

Previously, to deploy a php application eg. wordpress, on Windows, we have to use something like XAMPP (that’s what I used anyways) and the like, do some configurations, pull hair and throw some fits to be able to deploy successfully.

Now they’ve released this thing called Microsoft Web Application Installer, which is a freeware and suppose to ease those pain while deploying.

The Web Application Installer Beta is designed to help get you up and running with the most widely used Web Applications freely available for your Windows Server. Web AI provides support for popular ASP.Net and PHP Web applications including Graffiti, DotNetNuke, WordPress, Drupal, OSCommerce and more.

System requirements

  • Supported Operating Systems are: Windows Vista RTM, Windows Vista SP1, Windows Server 2008
  • You must have administrator privileges on your computer to run Web Platform Installer Beta
  • .NET 2.0 Framework
  • Supported Architectures: x86 and 64-bit

Detail feature reading and some Q&As here.

Sounds simple enough. Oh yah, me want, me want, I want WP on my Vista!!!
So lets test it out, download Microsoft Web Application Inataller here and instruction to install wordpress.

Alrite, here I go…………..

I have reinstalled Visual Studio.Net 2003 just to work with some of the old .net 1.1 projects. This one project uses infragistics web components and I’m getting the error on those pages with infragistics controls.

Program Version:

# Infragistics NetAdvantage 2005 Volume2 + hotfixes
# Visual Studio.Net 2003
# Windows Vista Ultimate

Problem:

I have my project with valid references, building and running fine except while browsing to those pages with any reference to infragistics components I’m getting the compilation error as mentioned below.

Error:

Compilation Error
Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific error details and modify your source code appropriately.

Compiler Error Message: BC30009: Reference required to assembly ‘Infragistics.WebUI.Shared.v5.2′ containing the implemented interface ‘Infragistics.WebUI.Design.IGetClientSideEvents’. Add one to your project.
Line 1: <%@ Register TagPrefix="igsch" Namespace="Infragistics.WebUI.WebSchedule" Assembly="Infragistics.WebUI.WebDateChooser.v5.2, Version=5.2.20052.1039, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7dd5c3163f2cd0cb" %>

Solution:

In order to run applications that use the Infragistics Web Controls on your machine, you will need to set the Copy Local flag to True for the Infragistics.WebUI.Shared.dll Assembly. This is because that assembly is registered into the Global Assembly Cache by the Windows Forms products, but ASP.NET Web Applications, by default, do not look in the GAC to resolve assembly references at runtime. Therefore, the Infragistics.WebUI.Shared assembly must be copied to the local project directory in order to run the Web application under IIS.

# More detail explanations: Whats the deal with Infragistics.WebUI.Shared.dll and the CopyLocal property?

If you don’t want to make Infragistics.WebUI.Shared.dll copylocal property to true then, add the dll file in the bin folder and refresh your page, it will work but better to make CopyLocal property to true.

  • Just going through my feeds and this one interests me. There is an announcement of the next version of Visual Studio and .Net Framework: Visual Studio 2010 and .Net Framework 4.0.

Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework 4.0 mark the next generation of developer tools from Microsoft. Designed to address the latest needs of developers, Visual Studio and the .NET Framework deliver key innovations in the following pillars:

    • Democratizing Application Lifecycle Management
Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) crosses many roles within an organization and traditionally not every one of the roles has been an equal player in the process. Visual Studio Team System 2010 continues to build the platform for functional equality and shared commitment across an organization’s ALM process.
    • Enabling emerging trends
Every year the industry develops new technologies and new trends. With Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft delivers tooling and framework support for the latest innovations in application architecture, development and deployment.
    • Inspiring developer delight
Ever since the first release of Visual Studio, Microsoft has set the bar for developer productivity and flexibility. Visual Studio 2010 continues to deliver on the core developer experience by significantly improving upon it for roles involved with the software development process.
    • Riding the next generation platform wave
Microsoft continues to invest in the market leading operating system, productivity application and server platforms to deliver increased customer value in these offerings. With Visual Studio 2010 customers will have the tooling support needed to create amazing solutions around these technologies.
    • Breakthrough Departmental Applications
Customers continue to build applications that span from department to the enterprise. Visual Studio 2010 will ensure development is supported across this wide spectrum of applications.

Here is a full overview of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and some more reading on vSTS 2010 (code-name “Rosario”): What’s new in Visual Studio Team System 2010. Read some more detail announcement on Somasegar’s (senior vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft) post: What’s next for Visual Studio and .NET FX?

Ok, that’s about it for now.

    Just Bitching

I have never encountered this much pain in the arse customer than the current one before.

I’ve done twice/thrice more complicated and bigger projects than this project in the past but never ever had this much of discussions, arguments, back and forth explanations and long meetings after meetings with the customer before.

I grew a few white hairs after handling this project and going to grow some more since the project is no near to the closing stage.

I thought I’m 90% done after sending out the last build and the user manual. I’m only expecting minor bug fixes but NOOOOOOOO he just has to go change the whole damn lot and have to fix almost everything from the DB schema to almost every form.

It’s all because of this F*ed up requirement spec and F*ed up customer to start with. I need a bad ass project manager to handle this kind of bad ass customer. Unfortunately, there is no proper project manager was assigned to this project, thinking it’s going to be a small one. I know I should
turn myself into a bad ass bitch to take matters into my own hand but the problem is I can’t become the bad ass bitch; I don’t know how.

It’s not that easy to become a good “bad ass bitch” when you’re trying to become one. You need certain skill in that area as well. I’m terrible in that area. The most I can do is I start raising my voice and become angrier but there is no art/tactic in it.

My main problem is that the angrier I am, the quieter I become. I’ll just yell back a few words then I won’t talk anymore. I got mess up in the head that I can no longer put those mess into proper word. I need some trained/naturally talented bad arses to back me up with the arguments. I think I need to go take a course on the art of bitching. Let me know if anyone providing one.

Anyways, my boss is just so nice dealing with customers. He accepts anything if they pay for it. Ok, it’s actually a good thing if they pay for it but what if they don’t pay and just keep bullying me and dragging the project on and on?

There should be a time when we say, “That’s it, no more, we are done, no nil nada F* off!”, and close the damn project.

Anyways, I’ll have to do more analysis and effort sizing on the new changes. I’ll bitch more about it later. Bye!

I haven’t been following any news, feeds or even personal emails. Just now I ran through GV flags quickly and found this one interesting so checked out the link. It really makes me smile so just sharing here. Some GVers translated back into various languages haha. Amusing indeed.

You’re No One If You’re Not On Twitter – The Twitter song.

You’re no one if you’re not on Twitter
And if you aren’t there already you’ve missed it
If you haven’t been bookmarked, retweeted and blogged
You might as well not have existed

In the old days it was all about achievements
Collecting all your trophies in a shrine
Then everybody came across the internet
And suddenly you had to be online

A home page was all you really needed
To seem like a success but not a geek
As long as you updated semi-annually
And checked your email once or twice a week

You’re no one if you’re not on Twitter…

    Technology was moving rather quickly
And the next thing you needed was a blog
With intimate and detailed press releases
And now and then a photo of your dog

More recently the students brought us Facebook
And everybody has a hundred friends
The parties in the photos look amazing
They’re not so great but everyone pretends

You’re no one if you’re not on Twitter…

Now you need to publish every movement
And every single thought to cross your mind
I’m told the Twitterverse is full of rubbish
But most of us are actually quite refined

    We validate each other’s insecurities
And brag about the gadgets that we’ve bought
We laugh out loud at every hint of jolliness
And try to self-promote without being caught

You’re no one if you’re not on Twitter…

So are you somebody or nobody? Are you on twitter yet? Oh yes, luckly I’m someone on twitter. LOL

There is a video, mp3 download, TShirt and a few other stuffs about the Twitter song. Better go check out at I Hate Morning site.

Yesterday, I went to see my brother’s squash game at Defence Club. There is this Fiji Bitter Squash Tournament going on here at Suva for this whole week – every evening after 5pm. My bro’s game was supposed to be on Monday but his opponent didn’t turn up so they postponed the game to Tuesday (yesterday). He played against one Indian man around 40+ (hmm I forgot his name) and was thrashed badly.

    Fiji Bitter Open 2008

It was the very first squash tournament for my brother since he started playing squash a few months back. We use to play Badminton only and this year my bro started playing squash with some of his friends so he still has a lot to learn before he can compete in the tournament. Nevertheless, he signed himself up in B Grade thinking C Grade is for kids and he would do fine in B. Well the result was he got knocked down pretty badly; he wasn’t really in his best form also and the opponent was quite experienced player who knows how to make him run around in court. So he lost his game and went into Plate pool and will be playing again today at Victoria Park. I guess I’ll go watch again this evening.

    Aung’s very first squash game

One of the Ministers, Mr. Kenneth Zinck (and a few other big faces I sometimes see on TV), came to play as well, I’m not sure he came just to play for fun or was in the competitions as I couldn’t stay long to watch his game. He was cheering his buddy’s game quite loudly/actively. I was taking a few videos of the game and itching to take him as well but that would be awkward to directly shoot at him so I was waiting for his game but I left early and missed the game. I think he wanted his picture taken as well cos’ he kept smiling at my way while cheering for his buddy (Ok may be just my thought) .

Tweety Bird NecktieI know him as one of the most active sport lovers among Fiji Government Ministers especially on Rugby games. We are sure to see him cheering from the front row in almost every Rugby games, yelling and waving his things (the flag/the banners I mean) at the camera. LOL. So we normally search for him everytime there is a Rugby 7 game on TV. Quite a celebrity he is. :P I also remember him very well after seeing him wear Tweety Bird necktie on one of the interview sessions on TV. Quite a fashion for him. It was so funny to see a Minister wearing some childish necktie with big Tweety bird at the bottom. I guess it must have been a gift from his kids or something. But that was one of the unforgettable sights about him. :D

There were some players from Nadi and other towns participating in the tournament as well. I met 4 young guys from Nadi; their coach was pretty nice man who encouraging us to join their club and telling us about his 4 players. His son plays in A Grade and other 3 guys play in Bs. He was also coaching a Korean girl who lost in ladies game against a Fijian girl. He said he also will be playing in the competition but I missed his game.

    Coaching a Korean Girl

The Game with a guy from Nadi

Well you see, I had some ulterior motives, it’s not just watching my brother’s game but I went there to check out some good looking players but turn out only the old men were there. :D The Nadi guys are quite cute but they’re just too young, under 19. hehe Oh but there is this handsome organizer, I heard he’s very good player and former Fiji representative or something. Aww but it’s a pity he got ring on his finger haha. Nah I’m kidding, I just went there to cheer for my brother’s first game and also getting some material for my blog (Ok there’s still a motive behind but good motive). :D

Here are some more short videos I took: Two Games Mix + Score Sheet | Another Mix Game | Practice Games | Game Sheets

I’m going to watch the games today also at Victoria Park. One of our colleagues is playing in C grade and I’m sure more games to see today. They are having this tournament in 3 different places, Victoria Park, Merchant Club and Defence Club due to limited availability of courts in each club. Anyways, I hope I can watch some nice games this evening and hope that my brother and our colleague play well in their game also.

    Rolled some Geeks

Nothing much, just dropping a short post during lunch time. I rolled 2 new blogs to my GReader recently. The first one is “Geek Dreams” written by Shiva; he recently commented on some of my posts and that’s how I visited/came to know his blog. And the second one is “Geek What” by Tony Chung; I came across his blog via Shiva’s blogroll links.

I don’t normally roll all commenters’ blogs but ofcos’ those I’m interested in only. (Well I do roll a lot of not so interesting blogs as well just for the sake of tracking news for GV). Here are the things that make me want to roll these guys’ blogs. First impression counts seriously.

Geek Dreams” got me with this dashing green frog. Where was he from again? hmm I think I’ve seen him on Sesame Street or something…There’s not much information in the “About” page but I did a bit of looking around and thought this guy must be someone linked to Paradise Not Found gang since he links to one of the members from the Paradise Not Found.

He also got some interesting posts about the concerts he went to and how he got IPhone etc. But the thing that make me laugh was this post where he gone crazy over Chris Martin’s hand gesture.

Woooohoooooooo!!!!! Oh my fucking god chris martin waved at me!!! Feel like a giddy school girl right now!! He saw me!!!! He saw me!!!! He waved back!!!!! Chris martin waved!!!! Don’t care if u call me crazy..chris martin waved at me!!!

There he really cracks me up. Obviously he seems crazy about Chris Martin, I wonder what he would do if Chris Martin shakes hand with him. Now that something I like to see. :P Alright, good enough, rolling now.

First impression on “Geek What” is that the site look pretty neat and informative. You can see his photo and a short intro on the header. Ok, seem like we are in the same age and somewhat similar tastes, he got my attention from there. He got pretty good write up on “About” page too, you get to understand more about the blogger. Anyways, I checked his about page only after I rolled his blog. I rolled him straight after checking out his very first vlog post. Actually I was thinking of trying out vlogging as well after reading much about citizen media and video blogging posts on GV and Raising Voices. So I thought, so this person just started it, I might as well learn some stuffs from him like what kind of thing he vlogs about blar blah. And I go click, click and there he is…

So what do you think? He accomplished his 1st vlog splendidly didn’t he, he did make people smile, at least I smiled, no, I LOL. I had a great laughing at his video. Actually I rewind and watched it 3 times (serious!) and every times he never failed to amuse me. That’s it, he got me with this one video, I just have to roll you boy. LOL :P

It’s a pity, I couldn’t see comment box on the post. I guess my Firefox Adblock Plus must have blocked it. He uses some kind of comment system and I can only see that on IE.

Do check his vlog post as well, the write up is fun too. I hope he doesn’t mind me embedding his video here.

    Alrite that’s it I guess.
